Group Petitions for Tougher Animal Cruelty Laws

VICTORIA – A 24-year-old man accused of a beating a three month old pitbull puppy to death could plead guilty when he appears in court on Wednesday, January 26. Brent Malcolm Connors is charged with killing an animal and “causing unnecessary suffering to an animal”. The puppy, named Bandit, was found dead in a Victoria motel room around 1:30 in the morning new year’s day. A Facebook group called ‘Justice for Bandit’ is calling on the community to support a petition that would encourage a maximum penalty and tougher animal cruelty laws. Witnesses told police that they heard the dog yelping in pain; the sounds coming from a room at the Traveller’s inn on Douglas Street. When police entered the room it was covered in blood and animal feces. The puppy was lifeless on the bed with broken bones and internal injuries. Police say the the lone occupant, who was out on bail on other charges, was arrested. The SPCA says the incident has shocked the community, and it’s asking for a maximum penalty including a lifetime ban on owning animals. “Justice for Bandit” will be collecting signatures until Tuesday, January 25, in downtown Victoria.

Puppy Purchase Precautions

VICTORIA – A Victoria couple is warning people to do their homework, after the puppy they bought at a pet store died from Parvo-Virus. James Whittall and Holly Unsworth bought the four month old puppy from pet store ‘Creatures Great and Small.’ They claim a veterinarian told them the puppy received two vaccinations, but they were given too far apart, making the dog vulnerable to the highly contagious disease. The pet store was not available to comment on the case. The BC SPCA says the pet store industry isn’t regulated, and people need to do their homework before they buy.
