Family Dog’s and Puppy Introductions – Episode 2

www.pamsdogacademy.com This is a 7 part series on how I introduced our Labor Day House Guest Blue (a 11 week old Border Collie) to my current family dog’s (Isabelle, Bandit & Twix). The introductions took a few hours, but it was worth it as we had an amazing weekend together. There are many ways to train dogs to get along, but I happen to think that my way is the best. I reward calm behavior, introduce slowly, positively interrupt unwanted behaviors, and reward all behaviors that I like and want the dogs to repeat. It really is simple and does not take much time at all. It is sort of like teaching. If you start the year off right and train the students to do the procedures and teach them how things are done, then the entire school year runs smooth. Same with the dogs, if I teach them how I want them to behave by reinforcing good behaviors that I like, the inter-relationship between all the dogs is a positive one and everything runs smooth. :) Being a full time teacher, I like to relate a lot of what I do with dogs to humans and visa versa. I am not saying that dogs are like humans, but when training and getting behaviors to be repeated, dogs and humans are very similar. :) Have a great week! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit, Twix & Blue

Puppies chasing chickens: Dog Training

www.pamsdogacademy.com The other day we worked with Blue on learning how to be calm around the family chickens. He was running back and forth chasing chickens and looking for chickens when I arrived. Now he is calmly hanging out with them. This is the same thing that I do with my dogs or clients dogs that like to chase cats. Prevention is key! When the dog is reinforced for the proper behavior the dog is more likely to repeat that behavior. Because chasing chickens, cats or other things is highly reinforcing YOU MUST have a plan, a GREAT REWARD, a leash to prevent failure, and set the dog up to succeed. We were able to start really close to the chickens, but if the puppy was not able to be calm, then I would have moved the puppy further away until he was below his threshold. There was only one time in this session that I had to interrupt Blue for staring at the chicken and doing his herding stocking behavior. Have a great Day! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit & Twix

A man who said he choked his 10-week-old Labrador retriever as punishment for biting is headed to court on a felony animal cruelty charge because the dog has died. Officials with the San Diego Department of Animal Services say Coco went into cardiac arrest early Friday and could not be revived. David Hale Warner took the dog to a veterinary clinic early Wednesday, saying he pinned the dog down for 20 seconds to teach it a lesson after the puppy bit his girlfriend on the nose. Officials say the dog couldn’t walk, was breathing poorly had reddish saliva and blue gums when it was brought to the clinic. After Warner was arrested, authorities learned he was wanted on a warrant charging him with spousal abuse. If convicted of animal cruelty, Warner faces prison and a fine of up to 000.
